Les Indemodables

The starting point is the classics of the great fragrance families: chypre, fougère, leather, amber, iris. Each perfume takes one of them somewhere else, with unexpected pairings and a generous overdose of a leading ingredient. The names say as much: Chypre Azural, Fougère Emeraude, Cuir de Chine, Iris Perle, Vanille Havane, Patchouli Noisette.

The less visible part, and perhaps the most interesting, is the raw materials. Rémi Pulverail founded the Atelier Français des Matières, a lab whose research team, led by biochemist Jean-Philippe Paris, develops natural extracts reserved for the brand, called Grands Crus. They come from small growers and unusual terroirs, and some plantations work exclusively for the house. Extraction uses ultrasound and plant-based solvents rather than petroleum derivatives. Some materials are first dried or aged (iris, vetiver), fermented (patchouli) or roasted (coffee, cocoa, hazelnut).

The formulas are by perfumer Antoine Lie, the creative director, who also helps develop the extracts. Everything is made in house at the lab in Archamps, Haute-Savoie, in small batches, from weighing and maceration to placing each bottle in its box by hand.
