Milano Fragranze

Milano Fragranze works from one simple, very specific idea: each perfume is dedicated to a place in Milan. The brand's creator was born and raised in the city and remembers exploring it at the age of four, riding an old wooden tram with their mother. Going back to the same places ten, twenty, forty years later, they found them changed, yet with the same genius loci, the spirit of the place, which the brand took as its starting point.

The place is only the backdrop, though. Each fragrance is about the people who have walked past it for generations, past the same statues, walls, canals and cobblestones. Basilica has Milan's great churches in mind, with thyme, rosemary, a warm milk accord and incense. La Prima is opening night of the season at La Scala, with orange blossom, osmanthus and vanilla. Galleria honours the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Naviglio the canals, Diurno the city's historic public baths, Derby the horse races. Panettone puts the Christmas cake on your skin, with bitter orange, rum and immortelle. Piazza Affari, an aromatic fougère with pink pepper, cardamom, geranium and lavender, draws on the energy of the Stock Exchange; Brera is a spicy floral with saffron, jasmine and rose, dedicated to the artists' quarter.

Different perfumers sign the compositions. The official site names, among others, Violaine Collas (Basilica, La Prima, Brera), Dominique Moellhausen (Galleria, Derby), Mathilde Bijaoui (Panettone), Cécile Matton (Piazza Affari) and Julie Massé (Diurno). The note lists include plenty of essential oils and absolutes, from Bourbon geranium to orris.
